BACK HOME IN KENTUCKY is a standard size (8.5 x 11) format magazine printed on glossy stock, generally 48 pages per issue, published bi-monthly, 6 issues per year.

It is a “coffee-table” magazine reflecting a dynamic and contemporary Kentucky, rich in history, hospitality, and natural beauty.  Back Home fosters interest and pride in Kentucky, entertaining and educating the reader.  The magazine draws attention to the state’s little-known sites and events as well as its most popular and interesting places and events.

Queries:

We welcome queries and manuscripts on speculation that have a Kentucky connection and fall within these general areas:  Kentucky history (Chronicles), Kentucky locations (Field Trip), interesting people and people with interesting jobs or hobbies (Profile), nostalgia (Memories), arts and crafts/crafts (Made In Kentucky), cookbooks by Kentucky author or group (In the Kitchen).

The writer/photographer guidelines (provided below) are available to help writers and photographers prepare for Back Home In Kentucky submissions.

Focus:

Each issue focuses on a Kentucky “Destination,” which is the main feature of the issue and will be accompanied by a front cover photograph from the area of destination and from 2-6 pages of editorial copy (text and photos). The Destination piece is generally staff written or assigned.

Field Trip:

This is a mini-destination piece, featuring a place that perhaps is not as widely known but interesting for its historic significance, natural beauty, architecture, etc.  These can be any size, from a one-page feature with photo, to a 2-4-page spread. Good photos are important to this piece.

Kentucky Treasure:

Generally a one- to two-page feature of an historic site, building, park, old-stand forest area, etc.

Memories:  A first person anecdotal feature of 2-3 pages in length.  This feature could be accompanied by old family photos.

Commonwealth Chronicle:  A feature relating to Kentucky history.  This could be about one individual, an historic place, event, or category (medicine, exploration, aviation). Length can be up to 4 pages. Photos and/or illustrations desirable.

In the Kitchen:  This is our recipe source and our opportunity to help a Kentucky group or author sell their cookbook.  Send us a free sample along with brief information about the group or author, price of the cookbook, and how to order.  We select about a dozen recipes for our “In the Kitchen” feature, and give How to Order information at the end. All orders for the cookbook go directly to the group/author.

Photographs:  Photo essay submissions are welcome.  Back Home In Kentucky welcomes submissions of color transparencies for cover consideration, but please query as to editorial calendar as covers are determined by our "Destination" feature. We use about 25 photos per issue, less than 10% on assignment.
